On the Nintendo Switch, the Dock mode allows you to play in 1080p, where its screen offers only a 720p display in portable mode, with a difference in terms of rendering. But for the Steam Deck, it should not be the same. Thus, this is what Greg Coomer says, the designer of the Steam Deck on the Dock mode of the "console":
We felt that it was actually preferable, all well considered, not to change the power of the console as a function of the status of the device, whether fixed or mobile.
We really wanted to give priority to its use in what we thought of being the most important case of use, namely the mobile.
And so, since we focused on that, we chose a threshold where the machine will work well, with a good spray frame for AAA games in this scenario. We wanted a simpler design goal and give priority to that.
Valve therefore wants the experience with and without dock to be the same for all. Among other new info, you can learn that black should be the only color available but that discussions are underway on the subject (other colors so). For the record, the Steam Deck should be available in December for those able to book on time and 2022 for others.
